The BlueGene Initiative
DNA-powered intelligence for the global ocean economy.
BlueGene is a coordinated global initiative to monitor biodiversity and detect invasive species across major ports using environmental DNA (eDNA). The goal is to transform biodiversity monitoring in marine infrastructure from reactive and fragmented to predictive, standardized, and decision-ready.
Ports are the backbone of global trade, but they are also major gateways for biological change. Marine shipping unintentionally moves species across ecosystems, creating risks to biodiversity, fisheries, and the broader blue economy.
At the same time, decision-makers lack consistent, scalable data to monitor biodiversity in these critical environments. The result is a global blind spot in managing biological risk across marine infrastructure.
BlueGene uses eDNA to analyze trace genetic material directly from water samples, enabling rapid, non-invasive biodiversity assessment and scalable monitoring across locations and time.
- Biodiversity assessment across major marine infrastructure.
- Detection of invasive and endangered species.
- Standardized monitoring that can be repeated across ports, regions, and years.
Phase 1: 100 key ports across North America and Europe.
- Establish baseline biodiversity across major shipping hubs.
- Enable early detection of biological invasions.
- Build a shared, open data foundation for long-term monitoring.
- Create the data infrastructure layer needed to modernize marine environmental management.
- Protect ecosystems from biological invasions.
- Safeguard economic assets tied to fisheries and coastal industries.
- Support regulatory compliance and environmental reporting.
- Enable proactive, data-driven decision-making.
We are building a coalition of all stakeholders:
- Port authorities and operators.
- Government and regulatory agencies.
- Indigenous and local communities.
- Shipping, energy, and infrastructure companies.
- Environmental and research organizations.
- Participate in the first global, standardized marine biodiversity monitoring database.
- Access high-quality, comparable environmental data across regions.
- Strengthen environmental leadership and ESG positioning.
- Help define the future of 21st-century biodiversity intelligence.
